TL;DR

  • The U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Tampa, sunk in World War I, has been discovered off the coast of Britain by the Gasperados Dive Team.
  • The Tampa was torpedoed by a German submarine on September 26, 1918, resulting in the deaths of 131 people aboard, the largest single American combat loss of life in WWI.
  • The wreck was found approximately 50 miles off Cornwall, more than 300 feet deep in the Atlantic Ocean, after a three-year search by the dive team.
  • The ship had been on convoy duty and was the only one of six U.S. Coast Guard cutters sent overseas that never returned.
  • The Coast Guard plans further underwater research and exploration of the wreck site.
  • Other WWI shipwrecks have also been discovered in recent years off the coasts of Morocco, Scotland, and Chile.
