A data center moratorium would undermine America’s future
Sen. Bernie Sanders’s (I-VT) recent call for a nationwide moratorium on data center construction may be framed as a pause for democracy’s sake, but in practice it would lead to very different consequences as a federally mandated halt on infrastructure and economic progress would weaken American innovation, undercut local decision-making, kill construction jobs and hand a strategic advantage to our global competitors.

TL;DR
- A data center moratorium would negatively impact American innovation and economic progress.
- It would override local government decisions and citizen input.
- Data centers are vital infrastructure for the digital economy, supporting services like streaming and online banking.
- Halting construction would shift investment and talent to global competitors like China.
- The construction industry is experiencing economic pressure, and data center projects are currently offsetting declines in other private nonresidential construction segments.
- Data center construction provides jobs for a broad cross-section of the construction industry.
- Legitimate concerns about energy, land use, and environmental effects should be addressed through transparent and responsible local solutions.
- State and local governments are best positioned to manage data center development through negotiation and collaboration.
- A federal moratorium would eliminate flexibility and hinder progress, while balanced, locally driven solutions are needed for the U.S. to lead in AI and strengthen its economy.
