Waymo is voluntarily recalling approximately 3,800 of its robotaxis in the U.S. due to a software issue that could allow the vehicles to drive into flooded roadways. The recall follows an incident where a Waymo vehicle was swept into a creek in San Antonio after entering a flooded road.

Waymo acknowledged that about 3,800 vehicles with its fifth- and sixth‑generation automated driving systems could “drive onto a flooded roadway,” prompting a voluntary software recall after one vehicle in San Antonio was swept into a creek and others stalled in Texas floods. The company says it has “identified an area of improvement regarding untraversable flooded lanes” and is adding “additional software safeguards” and limiting operations in areas prone to flash flooding.

This framing treats the recall as a contained, fixable defect within an otherwise promising safety technology operating “over half a million trips every week.”

Neighborhood disruption and public unease

In Atlanta’s Buckhead neighborhood, residents report being “overrun” by empty Waymo vehicles “incessantly circling through a cul-de-sac,” with one neighbor counting “50 cars” passing between 6 and 7 a.m. Families describe the traffic as a safety concern for “small animals and pets” and “kids getting on the bus in the morning.”

Waymo responds with PR‑honed assurances, saying it is “committed to being good neighbors” and has “worked with our fleet partner to address this routing behavior,” while touting that its service “significantly reduce[s] traffic injuries and improve[s] road safety.” Yet the same report links the cul‑de‑sac issue to the water‑related recall and a video of a robotaxi allegedly running a red light, underscoring a pattern rather than isolated glitches.
