Mississippi investigators say a disturbing lynching scene concealed a killing

Police say Tasia Fortune was killed in a drug dispute and her body was later hung from a tree to make the death look like a lynching, intensifying fears rooted in Mississippi’s history of racial violence.

The discovery of Tasia Fortune’s body hanging from a tree in Jackson evoked the imagery of a lynching—but investigators now say the killing happened before the hanging, turning the case into a clash between an apparent racial terror scene and a suspected effort to disguise a homicide.

At a court hearing, Jackson police Detective Samuel Dukes testified that Fortune was killed during a dispute over drugs and that the hanging was “staged,” citing the medical examiner’s opinion. Authorities have not disclosed the precise cause of death or explained why they believe her body was displayed afterward. Two Black men—Jarques Ratliff and Earnest Lloyd Jr.—have been arrested and charged with murder.

The distinction matters legally, but it does not erase the scene’s impact. Fortune was Black, and her Aug. 3 discovery behind an abandoned home in Mississippi’s capital immediately recalled the state’s long history of racial violence. Her mother, Christy Spivey, said the staging “brought all the attention to it,” while also emphasizing that her daughter fought for her life.

The prosecution’s account is still an allegation, not a final finding. Ratliff, who remains jailed without bond, has pleaded not guilty and told the court he and Fortune were friends. His stepdaughter, Lashuna Jones, said, “He didn’t do it, and I’m behind him.” Spivey likewise said she hoped an innocent person would not be imprisoned.

The conservative source’s headline adopts the same central framing—that the hanging followed Fortune’s death in a drug dispute—but provides no additional reporting or competing interpretation. For now, the case rests on a stark contrast: prosecutors describe a murder followed by a deliberate display, while the broader public reaction has been shaped by what that display appeared to signify.
