Browns’ Last-Second Winner Ends Rodgers’ Comeback Bid in Cleveland

Cleveland survived Pittsburgh’s late rally with a career-long 56-yard field goal, extending its winning streak while Aaron Rodgers’ strong statistical night ended in defeat.

Cleveland turned a back-and-forth AFC North clash into a statement win Thursday night, edging Pittsburgh 27-24 on Andre Szmyt’s 56-yard field goal with 10 seconds remaining.

The result underscored two contrasting storylines. The Browns, now 3-1, twice built momentum and then held their nerve when Pittsburgh erased a 21-7 deficit. Deshaun Watson passed for 268 yards and a touchdown, including a 46-yard contribution during Cleveland’s decisive fourth-quarter drive. The victory also extended the Browns’ Thursday-night winning streak to eight games.

Pittsburgh’s version of the game was more complicated than the final score suggested. Aaron Rodgers threw for 299 yards and three touchdowns, and his late touchdown pass to Pat Freiermuth followed by a two-point conversion tied the game at 24. Yet the Steelers could not complete the comeback: Rodgers’ final attempt to reach field-goal range ended with Grant Delpit’s interception at the Cleveland 18 with one second left.

The defeat continued Pittsburgh’s persistent problem on the road against AFC North opponents on Thursdays, dropping the Steelers to 0-10 in that situation. Cleveland, by contrast, showed the balance that has defined its fast start: Watson managed the offense, the defense sacked Rodgers five times, and Szmyt delivered under maximum pressure.

For Rodgers, the loss spoiled what was billed as his likely final Thursday-night appearance and left him short of a chance to match Tom Brady’s record of 14 wins on the holiday broadcast. Before the game, Rodgers acknowledged the strain of the schedule: “I just suck it up for those three hours and then know you get a reward on the back end.” On this night, the reward belonged to Cleveland.
