Trump’s New Press Secretary Pick Puts Loyalty Ahead of Experience
Katie Zacharia’s appointment highlights the Trump White House’s preference for trusted MAGA allies, while questions about her brief DHS tenure and media experience raise doubts about how she will handle a combative press corps.
Donald Trump’s choice of Katie Zacharia as White House press secretary is being cast as both a reward for loyalty and a test of whether allegiance can substitute for governing experience.
Zacharia, a conservative commentator and communications adviser for Trump Media, will replace Karoline Leavitt, who left the post in August. Trump praised her “unblemished record of support” and called her a “loyal and brilliant supporter” and a “devoted fan and member of MAGA.”1 The language makes the political calculation clear: the president is selecting a close ideological ally to serve as his public voice.
Liberal-leaning coverage has emphasized that alignment. Zacharia’s work for Truth Social, appearances on conservative television and history of defending Trump suggest she is likely to reinforce the administration’s message rather than create distance from it.2 CNBC described her as a “hardline Trump supporter,” while noting that her appointment was initially reported as an offer and that it was unclear whether she had accepted it.3
Conservative coverage presents a broader résumé: Zacharia has worked at the Department of Homeland Security, advised Trump Media, appeared on Fox News and Newsmax, and held roles in Republican politics. The emphasis is on her familiarity with the movement and its policy arguments, particularly ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.5 Vice President JD Vance echoed that confidence, saying he was “looking forward to [her] first briefing and working with [her].”

Yet the appointment also carries an internal warning. A former DHS colleague called Zacharia “full on MAGA” but said she “didn’t know DHS enough to be an effective (or accurate) communicator.”6 That contrast—political trust versus institutional command—will define her first test as the White House resumes regular briefings and faces lawsuits over press access.
