New fossils uncovered at Dinosaur National Monument, leading to first excavation there in a century

Dinosaur fossils were discovered at Dinosaur National Monument during parking lot construction.
This is the first excavation at the site in more than 100 years.
The fossils are believed to belong to a large, long-necked dinosaur, possibly a Diplodocus.
Around 3,000 pounds of fossils and rock were excavated between September and October.
The fossils are currently being cleaned and studied at the Utah Field House of Natural History State Park Museum.
The last excavation at the bonebed area concluded in 1924.
Recent research suggests dinosaur populations were thriving before the asteroid impact 66 million years ago.
A separate nearly 70-million-year-old dinosaur fossil was found in Denver in January 2025.
