Researchers Document Disappearance of Indonesia's 'Eternity Glaciers'
The last tropical glaciers in Oceania, located in Indonesia's West Papua region, are rapidly disappearing due to climate change. Researchers who traveled to Puncak Jaya are documenting the loss of the glaciers, which have shrunk by approximately 95% since 2002 and are expected to vanish entirely in the coming years.
Indonesia’s last so‑called “eternity glaciers” are vanishing far faster than most political and economic systems are willing to respond, crystallising a clash between scientific urgency, industrial interests and global climate inaction.
Researchers from the climate-arts group Project Pressure trekked to Puncak Jaya in West Papua to build the first 3D photogrammetry model of the East Northwall Firn glacier before it disappears.1 The remaining ice has shrunk by about 95% since 2002 and is expected to vanish within years, a process one account frames starkly as “planetary destruction on fast‑forward”.2
Scientists vs. the clock
The expeditions portray a race against time: a helicopter ride from sea level to 4,150 metres, drone flights between rolling clouds, and survey targets scattered across rock where ice recently stood.1 In this framing, the story is less about a picturesque glacier and more about documenting the terminal phase of a global climate system already pushed beyond familiar boundaries.2
Local and industrial realities
Yet the same mountains are also the backdrop to some of the world’s largest gold and copper operations run by PT Freeport Indonesia, whose mine is described as “controversial for its environmental and social impacts, including pollution and displacement”.1 Indigenous Kamoro and other Papuan communities now see ancestral lands overlapped by restricted roads “escorted by armed military” and rivers that locals say have become waste channels.1
Climate justice fault lines
Liberal coverage strongly links the glaciers’ disappearance to global heating and casts it as a symptom of an extractive model that concentrates benefits while exporting costs to remote ecosystems and Indigenous peoples.1 At the same time, Indonesia’s dependence on mining revenues and global demand for minerals needed in energy transitions complicate calls to simply “leave it in the ground”.
The glaciers’ final melt, then, is not only a climate metric; it is an indictment of a world that can precisely model loss but still struggles to confront the political and economic structures driving it.2
