American Airlines no longer lets basic economy flyers earn miles
Starting this week, American Airlines will no longer reward customers with miles for basic economy tickets.

TL;DR
- American Airlines will stop awarding frequent flyer miles and Loyalty Points for basic economy fares purchased on or after December 17, 2025.
- Basic Economy ticket holders will still receive a free personal item, carry-on bag, snacks, and in-flight entertainment.
- Elite loyalty members can still receive first-class upgrades on domestic flights when flying on basic economy tickets.
- This change aligns American Airlines with Delta Air Lines, which also does not award SkyMiles for its basic economy tickets.
- United Airlines allows mileage earning on basic economy but restricts carry-on bags for these fares.
- Southwest Airlines also offers basic fares with restrictions on boarding and seat assignment, though miles are earned at a lower rate.
