FAA Investigates Boeing 777's Low Flyover at Texas Airport

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating an incident where a Boeing 777 cargo plane performed an extremely low pass over a small airport in Central Texas. Video of the event at Horseshoe Bay Resort Jet Center, which went viral online, shows the large aircraft flying just feet above the ground.

A viral video of a Boeing 777 cargo jet skimming just above a Central Texas runway has become the latest flashpoint in the debate over aviation safety culture versus spectacle. The Federal Aviation Administration is now probing whether the dramatic maneuver crossed the line from controlled test to reckless stunt.

Safety regulators vs. “stupid pilot tricks”

Federal officials have opened an inquiry into the low flyover at the Horseshoe Bay Resort Jet Center after footage showed the wide‑body freighter passing at an estimated 25 feet above the ground, according to flight‑tracking data. A CBS News video segment underscored that the incident quickly spread online, pressuring regulators to respond.

Former National Transportation Safety Board Chair Robert Sumwalt framed the episode as a textbook case of poor airmanship rather than a technical edge case. Calling the maneuver “another example of stupid pilot tricks,” he said he saw “no legitimate reason at all to perform this maneuver the way that it was done,” noting that the crew appeared to have “an audience standing by to watch it and to video it.” Sumwalt warned the pilots could face credential suspensions.

Operator distancing vs. test‑flight rationale

The aircraft’s owner, Jetran, has emphasized that this was a “final pre‑delivery test flight” before the jet entered service with Qatar Airways Cargo and that the flight had been coordinated with air traffic control as a “low approach.” At the same time, the company distanced both itself and the future operator from the optics of the event, stressing that, despite the Qatar Airways paint scheme, the jet “was not owned or operated by Qatar Airways” and that “the pilots on board were not Qatar Airways pilots.”

Jetran publicly backed regulatory scrutiny, saying it expects “the relevant parties and authorities to investigate this matter thoroughly and take appropriate action,” a posture that implicitly supports the FAA’s probe while leaving open whether the flight was an overzealous test or an unacceptable stunt.
