Conservative outlets largely framed the night as a show of resilience and latent support. The Blaze celebrated that “'USA!' Chants Rock Madison Square Garden as Trump Attends NBA Finals,” emphasizing that patriotic cheers eventually rose above the jeers.¹ Fox News likewise stressed the “mixed reaction” and contrasted New York’s boos with the “raucous” cheers Trump drew at the College Football Playoff national title game, using the comparison to argue that coastal hostility is not representative of the country at large.² The Washington Examiner highlighted how Trump “smiled and saluted under a mixed torrent of boos,” casting his demeanor as stoic amid hostility in a “famously blue” city.³ Even a straight description of the anthem moment in the Washington Times was reframed to note that “the crowd reserves biggest ire for Spurs,” subtly minimizing anti-Trump sentiment.⁴

Liberal coverage flipped the emphasis. Wonkette mocked the visit as a curse on the Knicks, declaring “Knicks Touched By A Loser As Trump Shows Up, Gets Booed, Goes To Sleep” and blaming his “toxic and unwanted” presence for breaking the team’s 13-game winning streak.⁵ The Guardian treated the event as an exercise in vanity politics, arguing that at “the Knicks’ biggest night in 27 years,” Trump was really playing his “favorite sport” — status — and questioning why he would prioritize spectacle over governing crises like “soaring living costs” and “war with Iran.”⁶

One outlier is The Gateway Pundit, which echoes right-wing politics but, in this case, adopts a liberal-coded storyline as it hypes the “'USA! USA! USA!' Chants” on Trump’s arrival while still acknowledging “a mixture of some boos.”⁷ Across the spectrum, the same facts — boos, chants, traffic disruptions, a VIP suite — are selectively magnified or minimized to fit preexisting narratives: populist martyr, petty narcissist, or simply a president treating an NBA Finals game as another campaign stop.
