Michigan Shooting Leaves Police With a Suspect but Few Answers

Six people, including the suspected gunman, died in a multi-scene shooting in rural Michigan, while one person remains critically injured. Police say the public is safe, but the motive and sequence of events are still unknown.

Six people are dead and one person is critically injured after a multi-scene shooting in rural Michigan, leaving investigators to reconstruct the violence while families await answers. The suspected gunman also died, ending the manhunt but not the uncertainty surrounding the case.

Michigan State Police identified the suspect as 39-year-old Chad Hickman and said officers tracked his vehicle to a wooded area, where Hickman and another person were found dead. The liberal account emphasizes the unfolding search: authorities had warned that Hickman was “armed and dangerous” before locating him, while court records showed he was facing a divorce and had previously pleaded guilty to two misdemeanors. It also stresses that investigators have not established what led to the shootings.

The conservative account provides a more detailed reconstruction of the crime scenes. It reports that three people were initially found dead and another wounded at a home in Richland Township, followed by the discovery of a fourth victim at another residence. Hickman and the final victim were later found near the wooded area. That version also foregrounds police reassurance that there is “no ongoing danger to the public,” even as officials continue withholding the victims’ identities pending family notification.

The two reports broadly agree on the death toll, the suspect’s identity and the absence of an ongoing public threat. Their emphasis differs: one focuses on the manhunt and Hickman’s background, while the other maps the sequence of discoveries and highlights community safety. Both ultimately underscore the same unresolved question: what triggered the attack and how the separate scenes were connected.

Police spokesperson Lt Ashley Miller called the incident “heartbreaking for the community and challenging for the investigators involved,” promising a thorough investigation and further updates.
