Two American Flights Shared a Callsign—But the Real Risk Was a System Failure
A controller prevented two American Airlines flights with the same callsign from becoming dangerously confusing in Phoenix. The incident highlights both exceptional human vigilance and a preventable airline scheduling failure.
Two American Airlines jets converged near Phoenix while using the same flight number and radio frequency—a dangerous communications failure that was contained before it became an accident.

According to the account, one Flight 2482 was arriving from Chicago O’Hare while another aircraft, operating under the same callsign, had departed Phoenix for Chicago. The arriving flight’s delay had disrupted American’s original plan, prompting the airline to substitute another aircraft while retaining the callsign. American said it was “reviewing the details related to two American flights with the same callsign.”2
The controller responded by distinguishing the aircraft as “American 2842 departing” and “American 2482 arriving.” After 25 years in air traffic control, he called the situation “pretty incredible” and warned, “It could have been disastrous, but I’m glad it all worked out.”2
That contrast defines the incident. The conservative interpretation spotlights individual competence; the fuller account exposes the operational weakness that made such competence necessary.
