Alex Bregman’s Facial Fractures Turn a Routine At-Bat Into a Cubs Crisis
The Cubs third baseman was struck by a foul ball while standing in the on-deck circle, suffering reported facial fractures. Although surgery is not expected, the injury could test Chicago’s depth during a tight playoff race.
A routine moment between at-bats turned into a frightening injury Sunday when Chicago Cubs third baseman Alex Bregman was struck in the face by a foul ball while standing in the on-deck circle. The incident ended his day and raised fresh questions about the risks players face even when they are not actively batting.
Bregman was hit when teammate Michael Busch fouled off a pitch from Cincinnati’s Luis Mey. He ran toward the dugout covering the left side of his face and was taken to a Cincinnati hospital for X-rays and CT scans. Reports said he suffered facial fractures but would not require surgery. 1
The Cubs’ account emphasized the accident’s suddenness and Bregman’s immediate medical evaluation. Manager Craig Counsell said the ball struck “the left cheekbone essentially, under the eye,” leaving Bregman with bleeding, swelling and what he called “a terrible, terrible accident.” 1 Busch likewise described how quickly a hard-hit ball can become dangerous, saying, “Any time it enters the head area, it’s always a scary thing.” 1
A more game-focused account stressed the consequences for Chicago. Bregman was replaced at third base by Matt Shaw, and any extended absence could force the Cubs to rely on Shaw and Pedro Ramirez during a tight National League wild-card race. 2 That framing differs in emphasis but not in substance: both perspectives portray a severe, sudden injury with potentially important postseason ramifications.
Bregman later posted a photo showing significant swelling and blood on his cheek, but offered a defiant update: “Thanks for all the messages yall. I’ll be back.” 1 The statement suggests optimism, while the reported fractures leave his timetable uncertain.
