Trump’s Montana “Super Range” Promise Blends Military Expansion With Campaign Politics
Trump unveiled a proposed Montana military testing range at a rally aimed at boosting Republican candidates, tying advanced-weapons development to national strength and election-year messaging.
Donald Trump’s promise to bring a Pentagon “super range” to Montana combines a major military-testing proposal with a rally designed to strengthen Republican candidates in a competitive election state.
At the Kalispell event, Trump said the Defense Department would establish a facility for testing advanced weapons and technologies, potentially including autonomous weapons, space and electronic warfare systems, supersonic aircraft and hypersonic weapons. The announcement places Montana at the center of an ambitious modernization agenda, but the available account offers few details about the facility’s location, cost, timeline or environmental impact.
Trump framed the project primarily as a matter of national power, declaring that “Montana will help ensure the American military always reigns supreme.”1 That message fits the broader emphasis of his speech, which portrayed his administration as delivering economic gains while confronting foreign and domestic threats.
The political setting, however, was inseparable from the policy announcement. The rally sought to support Republican House candidate Aaron Flint, who faces Democrat Sam Forstag in a toss-up race. Republican Senate candidate Kurt Alme also attended, giving Trump a platform to link defense investment with the party’s electoral appeal.
The announcement echoed Trump’s recent practice of unveiling major projects during campaign appearances, including a proposed submarine repair center in Ohio. He also announced that Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac would invest $3 billion in Montana mortgages, promising assistance for 10,000 homebuyers.1
Supporters can present the range as jobs, technological leadership and a stronger military. Critics, though, would be left to ask whether the proposal is a fully developed defense project or another politically timed promise. The speech supplied a sweeping vision—but little operational detail to test it against.
